Glad the meds are helping. You might want to try some of the non-drug alternatives too. With many kids, including those whose symptoms are pretty severe, lots of daily vigorous physical activity will help. As will less TV, esp. before school and before bedtime.

Timers are a fabulous tool for many kids--ADHD or not. And adults too. I use a timer often. Helps keep me on track even though I'm not going to go out and play when the timer rings.

I would agree that for many children with ADHD or ADHD-like behavior, a breakfast of eggs versus oatmeal helps. For other kids, high-protein meals are less important. Mom and Dads just need to experiment to see what works best.

My daughter has ADHD and so do I. I lived it with pretty well though. I made good grades all during school, never got into trouble and didn't get diagnosed until I was 24. My girl on the other hand got kicked out of every daycare in the county! She has been to therapy and has took meds. The meds have by far been the best route for her.

I use a timer.. It keeps him focused and Sets a time frame. He then can focus on the work instead of thinking it's going to take forever before he can play.

I certainly empathize with you. Guess I don't quite understand why the answer to being stressed out is to work even harder! And 5 AP classes is a very heavy load. Hope you can figure out ways to feel less stressed. Vigorous physical exercise like running helps some high school kids, for example.

My personal experience was quite the opposite. I spoke to my school psychologist recently after spending the past 3 years of high school, and countless years of school before that, losing assignments, running late for class, forgetting homework, spacing out during lessons, forgetting about tests, and even forgetting a sock or two some days. I was told that I was just stressed and that I needed to work harder. I was a straight A student enrolled in 5 AP classes, yes it is a bit stressful, but now I am under more stress approaching finals with a B average for the first time in my life because I cant just compensate anymore.

Hard to say whether your son has ADHD or not. But I'm guessing he doesn't since you don't like the outcome of the meds and the teacher is telling you they're not working. Also hard to suggest to you what to do because I don't know enough about what he does, what he eats, how much sleep he gets, etc. But here are some general suggestions of things that are very important to curb ADHD symptoms and behavior: cut WAY back on TV (3-4 hours a week), NO TV before school or before bed. He needs lots of vigorous physical exercise every day and plenty of sleep at night.

Hi Dopke,

Thanks for your comment.
Your son probably doesn't have "true" ADHD. Sounds to me like he's a bright and super-creative kid. Cut WAY back on TV--maybe 3-4 hours a week maximum and never before school or before bed. Make sure he's getting lots of vigorous physical activity every day. Boosting protein in his diet and limiting sugar may help also.
